Our Vision

Our vision is to promote Data Science as a green field opportunity in Pakistan through academia-industry collaboration and contribute to a skill-based economy. We believe new era is cognitive and Data Science is new IT. Obviously realizing such a vision is challenging due to many factors such as:

  • Data Science has scarce resources worldwide to begin with
  • Pakistan is definitely at the lower end with that respect as we are late adopters of technology

Although academia owns every new field but it misses to capitalize on the potential due to mismatch and lack of joint ownership by the Government and industry Only having interest in a specific area is not sufficient for enthusiast in any field to take the next steps; This has especially become challenging in today’s information age due to a number of factors such as plethora of technical choices, resources available, complexity and interconnectivity among others. Data Science(DS) is not an exception to this, which results in having the demand to train new resources by the experienced people who could give at least the toolkit to these enthusiasts such that they can start their journey of DS for their daily problem solving.

We aim to :

  • develop industry-oriented data science resources in Pakistan - 1000 trained data scientists by 2020
  • assist transformation of classical IT professionals to AI/Big Data landscape
  • equip data science enthusiasts with tools, resources and guiding principles so that they can kick start their DS journey.
  • bring on table cutting edge projects and ideas for future data scientists

Our Strategy

Our efforts include but are not limited to

  • Training future data scientists from industry and academia through Data Science Hands-on workshops [link to Workshops Contents]
  • Promoting data science awareness to decision makers through Big Data Strategy Workshops [link to Workshop Template]
  • Mentoring and guiding top talent in Pakistan through projects from local and international industry
  • Providing a platform for publishing and sharing among data scientists in Pakistan -- knowledge sharing platform

Omer Ali

Omer Ali

Lecturer at Department of Computer Science

I am working in the field of Data Mining and Machine learning since last three years in the capacity of academia and research but I was exposed to real world problems. I am well aware of the importance of Data Science as it certainly is the future so I attended Data Science workshop in PUCIT along with other professionals and academicians from different backgrounds. The journey which started from the basic definitions of Machine Learning and Data mining has ended on hands-on practice in Python. Every module of workshop was perfectly placed and the flow kept everyone interested. The pace was tuned so finely that no one was left behind. The foundation of workshop was laid with introduction of core concepts and then taking us from concepts to real world problems was a perfect combination. Energizers from Dr Chan Naseeb was icing on the cake. The mentoring team is a blend of able academicians like Dr Zubair Nawaz, Dr Kamran and practicing industry professionals like Dr Shahzad Cheema and Dr Chan Naseeb. Undoubtedly, I can say that this workshop has added substantial amount of real world problem understanding and manipulation. This workshop was worth my money and time.

University of Management and Technology Lahore (UMT)

The workshop was a combination of various data science concepts with hands-on exercises related to concepts such as machine learning, visualization, big data framework Spark ,data mining, programming, Deep learning, data engineering, Agile process , introduction of Blockchain and its importance on our society. The Speakers used popular scientific Python libraries such as Numpy, Scipy, Scikit-learn, Pandas ,matplotlib and pyspark throughout all five days of workshop. All speakers were good in communication and expert in their fields. The workshop provided a sound basis on top of which students can build further skills such as deep learning, hadoop, tensorflow in depth. and participate in advanced competitions on Kaggle.

VP Products and Projects,

I have been into IT industry for 10 years. Most of the time I am handling large amount of Data and trying to empower Management to make excellent decisions for their business. The data science workshop in this perspective was of high importance. I attended this five day workshop in order to learn how much data science can help me to achieve the following:

  • Directing business to have actions based items, on trends which in turn help in defining business success goals
  • Challenging the staff to adopt best practices and focus on issues.
  • Identifying opportunities in various aspects of business.
  • Decision making with quantifiable and data-driven evidences.

This workshop had no doubt trend setting capability and was an answer to my daily challenges. The material was well organised, instructors were well-prepared and the delivery of material was executed in the proper manner so that every participant should get the proper understanding.
